If you are a beginner, you can also consider using the open-source program GIMP. GIMP doesn’t have the same easy-to-learn interface of Photoshop or the amount of professional power, but it can handle many of the same tasks. (For more information on GIMP, see the nearby sidebar.)
Designing with layers
The layer-based design of Photoshop enables designers to create and edit images as a collection of layers. Photoshop layers enable an unlimited amount of editing and adjustments without sacrificing the original quality of an image.
You can save the original image as a single layer — no matter how many other layers you add — or you can make copies of other layers. A layer includes all the pixels on one layer. (For more on layer masks, see Chapter 9.) You then modify the pixels that are on the layer and transfer them to another layer. You also can control the blending modes — the techniques for using the light and dark areas on an image to manipulate the details — of any given layer.
Working with layers
In the following sections, I walk you through the various ways you can use the layers in Photoshop.
Creating and saving layers
After you create a new layer, you can make any number of copies of the layer, and you can merge them with each other. Figure 2-1 shows the Layers panel, which displays the layers in your project.
**Figure 2-1:** You can make copies and merge layers in the Layers panel.
Layers are stored in file formats that are based on how the program is used to save information:.eps,.ai,.psd,.pic, and.png. (You can find an explanation of these and other file formats in Chapter 12.)
Layers are also saved automatically when you close a file. You don’t have to save each time you make a change. However, it can’t hurt to save once in a while because if you don’t save, the program works with the files as though they’re still open.
Even though layers are saved in file formats, you can’t see or edit those layers when they’re saved as their own file. You can’t view the original image, nor can you view other parts of the file.
Editing and combining layers
You can combine multiple layers to create an image that looks like one unified image. For example, you can change all the light areas of
In this post, we’ll take a closer look at what’s new in Photoshop for mobile, and also look at some of the new features in the latest version.
It’s also worth noting that in May 2017, two new features were added to Photoshop; Creative Cloud Collection and Smart Sharpen. Creative Cloud Collection is basically a collection of additional premium effects that can be downloaded and applied to multiple images.
Smart Sharpen is a tool that sharpens your images, automatically without you having to do it by hand. It uses the DoF Blur filter, which can be used by Creative Cloud users for blurring subjects in a photo, or can be used as a standalone effect.
Part 2 in this Photoshop series will show you everything you need to know about both Photoshop Elements and Photoshop for mobile.
New in Photoshop
Since version 16, Photoshop Elements has only had a single zoom level – it is 300%, and there’s little reason to change it.
Prior to version 16, Photoshop Elements wasn’t touch-optimised – it didn’t take advantage of the touch interface, and there were little things that made it less user-friendly.
Version 16 addressed all these issues. It allows images to be zoomed in by 2X, 4X and 8X. This means that you can zoom into any image and work with it at any zoom level. You can also view an image at any zoom level, or zoom into the areas you want to work with (be that the foreground or background).
You’ll also find new images with which you can work at any zoom level.
For web designers, the most important new feature is the fact that you can now preview the web design at any zoom level, even though it might be at a low scale. You might be surprised how your site looks at a scaled size of 2X.
What’s new in Photoshop Elements 2016
A list of all the features that are added to Photoshop Elements 2016 can be found below:
The Hand tool allows you to paint with your finger. This tool is ideal for light painting – it helps you track the movement of light, giving you much more flexibility when it comes to painting and drawing.
You can draw lines and shapes, blend colour, and use the overpainting techniques to create a layer of texture.
In previous versions, you could hand draw shapes and then press the Eraser tool to turn the image darker. This

Theresa May has said Islamic State would not be defeated as long as it had safe havens in Syria and Iraq.
In a speech to the Women2Win conference in London, the prime minister said tackling IS could be a long-term project.
She said she would not give “short shrift” to the problem, but warned not enough was being done.
Ministers announced plans to tackle abuse of child fighters in Syria and Iraq, as well as the gangs that capture women and children fleeing the conflict.
The conference was organised by the Royal United Services Institute to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two.
It brought together politicians, defence, humanitarian and development experts as well as women involved with help in war zones including Afghanistan, the Syrian and Iraqi conflicts, and women involved in peacebuilding.
Mrs May also called on the international community to help fund the work of “responsible mothers” in the Middle East, working to rebuild communities in which many have been displaced by war.
She said: “So long as IS have the safe havens they have in Syria and Iraq, we will not defeat them.
“We must therefore make sure we keep the pressure on, and not only defeat IS militarily but make sure we do everything we can to deny them the safe havens they need to perpetrate their murderous crimes.
“And it will take a long, long time, and it will involve a lot of effort but I am absolutely certain that it will be successful.”
‘Unacceptable in any way’
Mrs May also refused to accept that British and European aid was not working as well as necessary, saying resources had been “subtracted”, adding that spending could be increased.
She said: “Of course I am worried about the amount of money that is going to Nigeria for instance. I think that is something that should be looked at… we don’t have to have war on one part of the planet and poverty on another part of the planet.
“It is unacceptable in any way. And as we look at these problems we must all be taking the view that we will be able to solve this problem by 2035 or 2030.”
Top of the agenda
She also said many of the problems in Africa were “sustained and abetted by humanitarian workers” who “cannot walk away” from a situation that is
how to retrieve website information with azure bot in C#
I have built a user-bot which can be used by both chat users and website users. The main part of this bot is retrieving news articles from website(Currently the Bot doesn’t work from the website, as we need to retrieve data from a specific website). But I’m having problems retrieving the data from the website, as I have no idea what to do at this stage.
The code which I use to retrieve the webpages was taken from the Microsoft Bot Framework website, but I need to add something to it, to be able to retrieve the specific information from the website.
